How To Make A Jingle Bells Instrument To Accompany Christmas Carols

images1

Fun to make and a great accompaniment to the classic carol Jingle Bells, just shake to the beat. Who would have thought that rubbish and junk could sound so festive?

Al you need to make a jingle bells musical instrument is…
16 metal bottle caps, paint, brass nails, sandpaper, hammer and some scraps of wood.

First paint the out side of the bottle caps a nice metallic colour. Spray paint is quick and easy, but applying paint with a brush is just as good.

When the paint is dry, use a large nail and hammer to make a hole in the centre of each cap. Have the cap sitting face up as it would do on the bottle, that way the rough edges are created on the inside of the ‘bell’.

The bells are fixed to a piece of wood, roughly 2cm by 3cm and 28cm long. Give the wood a good sanding so that it doesn’t have any rough surfaces. You could paint or varnish the ‘handle’ if you wish to.
Working on one side of the handle at a time, attach the capes in pairs with the insides of the caps facing one another. Push a brass nail in the holes of the caps and offer it up to the wood.

Place the first set of bells 5cm away from the end. Don’t hammer the nail in too far into the wood. The bells need to move freely on the nail and clatter together.

The second set should be 8.5cm away from the end.

The third set should be 12cm away from the end.

Now turn the handle over to attach bells to the other side. Use scraps of wood to prop up each end of the handle so that it is clear off the workbench. Otherwise you will spoil the bells that you have already attached.

Add bells in pairs in the same way as you did on the other side, but this time the first set of bells 1.5cm away from the end. Add the other sets of bells so that they are level with the bells on the other side of the handle.

Then turn the handle over to attach the remaining set of bells. Again use scraps of wood to prop up the handle.

And there you have it, a set of jingle bells. Young children should be supervised when playing the jingle bells.

If you find it difficult to obtain bottle caps, you could ask an adult to approach a public house or bar, they have no use of the caps. You could also maybe write to a local brewery requesting some bottle caps. Alternatively look in the winemaking department of Boots or Wilkinsons for new bottle caps.

Voiceover Artist Radio Station Imaging David Kaye

VOICEOVER ARTIST RADIO STATION IMAGING
by David Kaye

I do a lot of radio imaging.

Many people call it “Radio Station Imaging,” or as I like to call it, “Promotional Branding and Station Identification.”

In this realm of the business, it is important to make sure that you’re set up as a proper company, that you’re a business. It is not a fly-by-night deal by any stretch of the imagination.

You’d better have the equipment. You’d better be prepared to work a lot and take care of your voice, because radio stations like to use you a lot.

In a contract, traditionally you’re committed to recording a page or two a month, whatever your agent negotiates, or whatever you negotiate for yourself. They’ll stretch that out. They’ll try to get as much as they possibly can out of a page. So radio station voice imaging is little bits and pieces and stuff and there is a page and stuff.

Typically, on a Monday or Friday a bulk of stuff will come in. That’s just the nature of the business.

The business has changed over the years, especially because of the Internet. There’s not as much money flowing around as it used to be. Some of the big companies are changing hands. We all know how that’s gone. The economy is different. But stations are still spending money on station voices. They are still going out and searching for them.

When someone listens to the radio station, in their head they’re hearing the imaging person the voice as the owner. If you’re hired to be the voice of a radio station, you’re that station’s identifier. You represent that station. It is a big responsibility. It’s not just, “You know, I do the voice.” No, that’s the sound of the station. So think of yourself as the radio station’s boss.

So if you’re going to be voicing stuff for radio stations, note that, first of all, the business has changed. There are even more opportunites now because there is satellite radio. There still are revenue stream issues, but if you want to get into it there is places you can put your voice. There are Internet radio stations.

You can do a lot of marketing on your own on the Internet to radio and TV stations. But be prepared to be a business. You’re a businessman. They want to hire you. They want you available. They want you versatile, and there is a certain style you need to keep in mind.

There are perimeters to being a radio imaging voice. So that means listening to what’s out there now, listening to what’s out there in the past, and maybe developing your own style…but within the perimeters. You’re selling the station. You are the station’s voice. That’s a big responsibility.

Varnishing the Body of a Stringed Instrument

images8

Written by S. Van Dyck

A good violin, viola or cello varnish can play an important role in perfecting the sound quality of an instrument. The varnish applied by Stradivari to his violins is still believed by many to be the secret the their phenomenal sound. Whether oil or alcohol-based, violinmakers prize their varnish recipes as one of the most important elements of the violinmaking process.

Before applying any coatings to the instrument, the white wood can be given a tan by exposure to sunlight for a period of several days to several weeks. Aging the wood brings out the color and visual character of the wood through oxidation and ultraviolet light.

When the wood has received the desired look, the next stage is applying a -ground- coating. A violinmaker may prefer to apply a primer or sealer first. While also darkening and deepening the wood’s visual depth, the ground coating strengthens and protects the instrument even after the varnish has worn off. Many recipes for the ground coat exist and typically this is a tightly held secret.

Next, the instrument is ready to be varnished. Many recipes exist; most consist of sun-thickened oils such as linseed, lavender or walnut oil combined with oxidized resins such as amber, dammar, balsam and shellac. Alcohol can also be used as a part of or in addition to an oil base. The mixture is left to sit for up to a week, being stirred a few times a day until the lac no longer sits at the top. The mixture is then boiled, cooled and boiled again, then filtered for impurities.

Adding color to the varnish mixture can help to bring out darker, richer tones, if the varnish mixture is too light. Coloring agents, or -lakes,- include turmeric and saffron for a yellow tone. Sandalwood and pernambucco bring out a redder tone. The varnish is then applied in many coats depending upon the thickness and consistency of the varnish. The varnish is allowed to dry in the sun between coats. Touch ups can be added if there are areas needing additional coating. The instrument can then be lightly polished using a soft cloth with alcohol and mineral oil and or polished out using pumice powders.

Blockbuster Whitney Houston Concert In Brisbane Is A Flop

images21

A whole lot of people in Australia were really looking forward to seeing Whitney Houston in concert just recently. It had been a long time, over 20 years, since she was there and they still love her. There were tons of ticket purchased for what was supposed to be a big blockbuster stage performance . This tour was called the Nothing But Love Tour, but it was not love that all of her loyal fans were feeling after seeing this disappointment.

It is common knowledge all the issues that she has had in life for the past 2 decades. All of the escapades between her and her famous husband were always splashed across the news releases. And everybody that knows of her knows about the drug abuse issues too. It wasn’t that she didn’t seem to be trying to do her best for this concert, it seemed that she just didn’t have it in her.

She seemed to make it through just the first 2 songs before things started to go bad. Only two songs and then she has to take a break and let her brother and the rest of the band take over for a while. So while she was nowhere to be seen they plated a few of her well known tunes to keep the crowd occupied.

After a while she came back on stage and tried to make it through the beautiful song that she is so well known for, I Will Always Love You. She had to stop partway through to apparently sooth her self with water and the way she sang the song was very throaty rather than the incredible way she sung it before. This was just too much for many of the people in attendance and plenty of them left well before the concert was over. There were a lot of questions, considering her past, about her health and habits. Her promoter blamed it all on the fact that she is a lot older now and is not able to hit the notes as well as she could when she was younger. He claimed there were no health issues worth mentioning.

Of course, he will stand behind the performance; after all he doesn’t wish to issue refunds to unhappy concert goers. However, due to the fact that she didn’t sing for about half the concert and sang poorly for the other half, there really should be some compensation offered to those who traveled to Brisbane after all these years, just to hear her perform. And perhaps if she is not up to the concert circuit, they should just keep fans happy by cutting new albums, leaving the live performances to those who are up to the task.

Which Music Instruments Can You Learn At Any Age

images18

Many of us are captured by music, so much so that music has become an important part of our lives. At some point in our lives, many of us want to learn to play a musical instrument. We may thing that taking violin lessons or guitar lessons is fun. Or we may fantasize that we can turn professional and perform on stage. Well, learning to play a music instrument like the ukulele, saxophone, guitar or violin may turn out to be more than a hobby as many people have gone on to teach once they have mastered the instrument.

It does not matter if your child is looking to learn a music instrument, or if you are trying to pick up the skills of playing violin or playing guitar at middle age. In this article, I will outline four music instruments which are relatively easy to learn at any age:

1.Ukulele

The ukulele is probably one of the easiest music instrument to play. Unlike the guitar, it has only four strings. The size of the ukulele is also portable, the smallest being the Soprano Ukulele followed by the concert and tenor ukulele. Even a child as young as four years old can take ukulele lessons and learn to play the ukulele by strumming simple chords.

2.Guitar

The guitar is currently one of the most popular music instruments around. Many young children and teenagers aspire to play the guitar at some point in time. The guitar is also relatively cheap, and you can opt to learn the acoustic guitar or the classical guitar as a start. Most teenagers nowadays prefer to learn the acoustic guitar to play pop songs. As with the ukulele, you will need to master how to strum chords for the guitar.

You also have the option to learn to play the electric guitar. However the electric guitar costs more than the acoustic or the classical guitar so if you are on a budget I suggest you start off learning the acoustic and classical guitar.

3.Violin

The violin is as popular as the guitar and can be learnt at any age. Violins come in many sizes, starting with 1/16 size for three year olds, to 1/8 size, size, half size, size and full size. The most important step in learning the violin, no matter what age, is to master the proper bowing and fingering techniques.

4.Piano

The piano can be learnt from age five onwards. The most important aspect in learning the piano is to practice constantly and master the playing techniques.

Musical Instruments are of different types and one among them is wind instruments. Starting from early times, wind instruments are being use by humans and the study of musical instruments is called as Organology.

Wind instruments are basically soft and are very pleasing to hear. Flute and saxophone are the best examples of wind instruments. When it comes to wind musical instrument, they are more often than not be in the shape of a tube that creates a sound when air is blown all the way through its body through a specific opening meant for blowing air.

A few kinds of wind musical instruments are made as such with a mouth piece for the purpose of blowing the air inside the instrument so that it can create sound. These kinds of musical instruments will require musicians to blow air according to the sound that they want to produce with the tube. In flute, we can observe that the length of the flute determines the pitch in which it produces the sound. You can see that among all the other instruments, wind instrument are in the usage a long time now and moreover has turn out to be more and more complex as time roles on. In the beginning these wind instruments were out like small tubes made out of wood with holes as mouth piece and hole through which sound comes out. As we all live in a world that is filled with modernization as well as mechanization, we will have to enjoy music in a much mechanical way, but then the soul of music never changes. In whatever state on mind you are in, music born from musical instruments can change it all so easily in no time.

Music Instruments

Archaeology of Musical Instruments Music has been important in civilization for thousands of years. Some of the greatest archaeological finds have been instruments from ancient time. Some of the oldest instruments included drums, small wind pipes made from reeds and wood, and wooden wind chimes. From these instruments we can learn that music has been an important part of the world for a very long time.

History of Musical Instruments Music instruments have a long and varied history. From the first instruments of drums, wind instruments, and small hand shakers and cymbals, instruments quickly changed into the lyres, harps, and more sophisticated versions of drum and wind instruments. In the middle ages the first string instruments were created as we know them today. At the turn of the 20th century, music changed again with the blending of cultures into the rock instruments that are most common today. Now we have evolved into creating instruments from almost anything from police sirens to trash cans. www.ramblax.com is a good site to visit for more instrument information.

Primitive and prehistoric The most primitive music instruments were usually drums made from tightened skins, wood sticks hit together, or wooden flutes carved from reeds and other materials. These instruments were in use for thousands of years before any other instruments were created.

Ancient systems Ancient musical systems were different type of music created all over the world in ancient times. Some of the most well-known music is that of ancient Chinese and Indian music. The sitar was a popular instrument. The Chinese are credited with creating the first instrument played with a bow.

Antiquity Music during the Greek and Roman heyday was characterized by the lute, lyre, harps, and other string instruments that were plucked. Cymbals were also a popular form of instrument during this time. The flute continued to be used as well.

Middle Ages The middle ages brought a change to music instruments. The Roman church did not like instruments and so the musical styling of that period are largely characterized by blended singing groups without instrumental accompaniment. However, some instruments did remain popular such as the lute which was popular with traveling bards.

Renaissance The renaissance period saw a change in the music instruments of the day. For the first time a string instrument was created that was played by pulling a bow across the strings. This opened up a whole new world of musical sounds in Europe.

Baroque The biggest music instruments change that came during the Baroque period was the invention of the harpsichord. This predecessor to the modern piano changed the way music was played forever.

Modern Musical Instruments Modern music instruments are not so different from ancient ones. The most popular instruments of today include drums, the piano, wind instruments, brass instruments, guitars, and stringed instruments. There are also many experiments with instruments such as using common household items. For more instruments visit www.ramblax.com.

Using musical instruments to help children learn

images7

As parents we are always seeking new ideas and ways of promoting healthy development skills in our children. For years studies have shown that children who actively partake in musical education have developed faster and more effective skills in a variety of areas. Studies have also shown that nearly every child has some sort of musical ability. We as parents simply need to provide the support necessary to help them fine tune these skills.
The first question we usually have is “what instrument should I choose?”. The answer to this is not a cut and dry, one size fits all type of solution. Many parents choose children’s piano’s as a first instrument as kids seem to be open to the ease of use and the different sounds a piano makes. Others will go for a more complex instruments such as a kids size guitar or school band instruments such as cello’s, harps, violins, xylophones and so on. Drums are also a great early musical instrument as children tend to enjoy the noise and fun of banging a drum. The bottom line is no matter which they choose the benefits are almost endless.
When a child begins to engage in musical activity numerous brain activity is being used. This activity is just the spark that some kids need to help them grow mentally and even build better physical attributes. Some of the most common benefits of instrument playing and musical instrument lessons are;
-Enhanced motor skills
-Stronger math and science skills
-Increased concentration
-Better ability to complete patterns and maze activities
-Parent and teacher bonding
-Higher sense of self worth
-Teamwork

While not every child will grow to be a professional musician, many will enjoy playing for years and some will even join their school band or form their very own Garage band someday. Others will simply turn toward other interests and that’s fine too. The point is to provide a healthy and fun way to enhance their development and early learning.

The Famous Optical Artist – Bridget Riley an Op Art Pioneer

images19

One of the major Optical Art (Op Art) proponents, British artist and printmaker Bridget Riley was born on the 24th of April, 1931 in London. Riley is most commonly known for her signature black and white oil paintings depicting geographic patterns that cause optical illusions which have become synonymous with the Op Art movement.

Bridget Riley was educated at the Royal College of Art from 1952 to 1955 and in these years her paintings were semi-impressionist and figurative. It was not until the 1960s that her signature style developed.

Riley’s black and white forms – painted in oil paint on canvas – gave viewers the impression of movement and colour due to optical illusions. Works such as -Movement in Squares- (1961), -Black to White Discs- (1961-62), -Loss- (1964), -Blaze 4? (1964), -Drift No. 2? (1966) and -Cataract 3? (1967) typically possessed such characteristics.

Bridget Riley’s paintings also had another feature – the potential for increased audience participation in the appreciation or display of the work of art. This was a hot topic in the 60s, when many performances were being classified as -happenings.- Happenings are unconventional and formless performances where audience involvement actually determines the course of the performance. Riley’s oil paintings were in a sense dependent on what the individual experienced on viewing them. Though the paintings were given names hinting at their subjects, they could be interpreted by the audience in any way.

Riley held the first of these exhibitions, which were pivotal in getting the world’s attention to the Op Art movement and Riley’s art, in 1965 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City. She had already held her first solo in 1962 at Gallery One, London. Other exhibitions followed, but it was the 1965 show at New York that drew international recognition.

By 1967, Bridget Riley began to modify her style and thought of incorporating oil colour in her art. She began incorporating on colour stripes in an oil painting entitled -Paean- (1973), -Dominance Portfolio, Blue- (1977), -Ra2? (1981) and -Silvered 2? (1981). Crucial to this change was the extensive travelling she undertook from the 1970s. The hieroglyphic decorations she saw during her visit to Egypt played an important part in leading her to incorporate colour and contrast. Her later works are colourful and some of these bright paintings include -Fete- (1999), -Echo- (2000), -Carnival- (2000) and -Sylvan- (2000).

Among the other achievements of Bridget Riley is her distinction of becoming the first woman and British contemporary painter to receive the International Prize for painting at the 1968 Venice Biennale.
